The board has landed.
Fins are very cool - thanks!
Lookin for wind but seems we have Seattle style
weather pattern for the next few days - will make a
Corpus Christi trip as soon as possible...
Thanks Again.

Glad to hear dude, hey, here are some picks of me on that board a few months ago at Nitinat, BC - super fun stuff.  Can you believe it, about 12 knots of wind on a 270 and a 6.7m:

JP-9.jpg  JP-8.jpg
JP-7.jpg    yes, that much wake comes from a windsurfer...cool, eh?

just wanted to say youre providing a great service to those who have not yet
hit the lottery.......im sick of spending 1500 for a board that sells the
next year for half that ....if you ever come across a ride 277 in good to
great condition, could you let me know????ill be checking the site often
also....thanks..and keep up the great work....jerry t
my pleasure Jerry, I too was fed up with smacking down >$1200 for a new board every couple of years.......crazy, plus to be very honest the reason I started this was out of concern for the environmental impact of each new board, sail, etc that was not finding a nice home after photo shoots...all that plastic and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)....it made me sick.
Hi Paul:
I just got a lead on two planning department jobs that are currently posted.
One is in the Parksville area. The other is assistant planner in the squamish/lilloette regional district with the work based in Pemberton. I hope that helps.
Robert

Robert thanks, I'll look into it and hook you up with the "get paul a job" offer....what do you want the 10.6m sail?  the 2001 formula board?

How in the heck do you derig on the water if your mast breaks. Do you carry a tool to pull with?   Also I am not sure how I would get the battens out of the pockets to roll the sail. I remember you showed me but am unable to lift up on the little plastic flanges to get it completely loose and remove the battens.

Thanks for all your help. I have clearly got a lot to learn. J, Seattle, WA
I'll go through your questions:
Subject: Sails 101

Thanks for your help. I think I got them all rigged and even  {my old] "crappy" old 5.2 looks pretty good with the battens not sticking through the sail!!
 Good!
Well in reality if your mast breaks try several things in this order:
0. can you still sail the rig?  sometimes yes! can you even 'get dragged' ashore? any shore? get that rig out of the water and see what happens, uphaul it backwards if need be, but try.

1. start swimming if you are say less than a km from land, position sail on top of board if possible as a break and lay on entire rig, and start swimming...you will be in the water though 95% of time....swim. (on no/light wind days this is something we all should practise)
2.ask (nicely, you are not panicking yet) for help from a boat, etc, get your buddy to sail ashore for help or get her to tow you in.
3.look at the mast...where is it broken?  can you take the broken top and take it out the top and then reverse it and stuff the narrow top into the mast?  ...in effect making a new mast;
4.ask for help again, offer beer, wine, dinner, get your cell phone out and call Dominoes to order a Pizza, they'll tow you back in.
5.calm down
6. think about how much your rig cost you....and how much of a deal it really was from WindsurfDeals.com and then realise that it is only a couple hundred dollars and take the rig and junk it, paddle ashore on your board and have a beer.  Oh, I forgot you got your mast new, so it is under warranty..keep a small piece of it (a scrap of carbon?) to make the warranty work.
7.If you are really cheap, and not too cold, but still crazy, then maybe derig the sail to self rescue (this is the absolutely last thing I'd do).  Take boom off (yes that uphaul line is now a pain in the ass),  Loosen, just a little, the downhaul - on Chinook extensions pull with one swift tug the downhaul line 180 degrees away from cleat - remember one swift tug.  don't loosen it too much or the whole thing will fall apart.  Take the battens out (some sails will not allow this without an Allen key, in which case go  back to number 6...some Naishes are like this (not the one I gave you though, push on FORWARD part of the plastic toggle, not the back) of course you WILL loose a couple of these battens...and at 20-40$ each that is more than the sail cost you from WindsurfDeals.com....place battens in mast sleeve, down your wetsuit, whatever you like...but they will disappear.  Roll sail up around mast, place on board, with boom and battens.  Paddle with your harness hook digging through that monofilm (repair $85) new sail from WindsurfDeals $150....I don't know about this choice???

Finally, if you can do number 7, then you clearly were not in waves or swell, in which case you were in flat water.....and  my advise here is to just start swimming......you have the appropriate, modern, well-fitting wetsuit right??? If not I'll order you one.
Having said all of this, if the water is COLD, and I mean COLD, do not hesitate get help ASAP.
No worries, i think I'll post some of this (w/o names) on the FAQ section
take care
Paul

I have found that if I downhaul more, the "spill pockets" you showed me seem more loose for higher wind. Intuitively this seems opposite but I could be wrong .   Yes, as you downhaul more the "leach" gets looser thus the sail 'spills' more wind, in effect not capturing as much of the wind that flows over the wing....this is what you want if you are overpowered, but only if you are overpowered., Paul
Got the equipment Sunday night. Found the train station and all went well.  Great packing job!.... it took me an hour to open it all! Everything looks
good so far.  I hope to try everything out either tonight or tomorrow. I appreciate the down haul tool (I didn't have one) My cousin is considering getting a board similar in volume to the one I got. Keep an eye out for me. He wants it to be in good shape, but it doesn't have to be perfect like mine, but by the same token he would prefer not to spend quite as much. Thanks again, MW
Good to hear!!!
oohh, I just sold two other boards like yours, a 295 and 285, doooo. They were not as nice as yours though.

I'll let you know when others come in for your cousin.

Hope you get some good winds, Paul

How to Downhaul? There really is no trick, but you have to use the pulley system in the extension to the max, i.e. thread the downhaul line carefully so as not to 'overlap' the rope...remember you want maximum mechanical advantage and zero friction, it can be tough, I seem to remember giving you a sail top piece rope extension to ensure the sail fits the mast? other than that, don't just use your bare hands, use a boom tube or other solid object to downhaul with (and use your foot to 'push' the mast extension away from you as you hold downhaul line steady) and MOST IMPORTANT  don't downhaul with anything behind you...in case the downhaul line. breaks....yes, it happens.  Failing that you can buy 'downhaul tools' that do a great job....there is only one worth the expense = the Chinook tool - around $50

ps. that person who had that truck's tow hook behind their head when their downhaul line broke really needs to buy a downhaul tool.

Paul, You certainly lead us to temptation with these deals.  I know I've been in the doghouse for a couple weeks because of it.  If I looked up Devil's Advocate in the dictionary, would your picture be there? Anyway, I purchased a couple sails from you some moons ago, the 7.3 Mistral is incredible. I have yet to sail the hurricane jib 3.5, just waiting for the storm.  I do find myself shopping for a floaty wave/bump and jump and some larger wave sails.  N.E. Florida wave sailing mandates large bomb-proof sails, fat boards, soft rails, and brass nads (I'm missing the sail and board portion).  I currently have a Tiga 263 Bump/Jump (86ltr approx.) collecting dust in the garage.  The JP 90ltr looks very nice, but do you think it would meet the needs of a 175lb rider w/ a big sail in 13-20knots of air.  Your recommendation would be appreciated.  Thanks for your time, and the deals (past and future) , JL
"If my wife leaves me because my habitual, wind oriented purchasing, I'm sending you the attorney's bill!" JL
HI JL,
funny guy, let me go through your wish list here:
 Also, I
hereby absolve myself from any wrongdoings and do solemnly swear that I disclosed all information pertaining to the said purchases by Jl from Paul.  Further, that Paul did clearly indicate that all purchases from WindsurfDeals.com, by definition, create tensions between said sailors and their married partners.  By definition this is what all windsurfers go through, indeed all instructional windsurfing schools have clause 55.7b, subsection c. that reads:
"You, the student windsurfer, do understand that by learning how to windsurf and by acquiring windsurfing equipment, you will strain your married relationship"   Of course clause 1-55.6 are all about how wives are protected for their shopping for female items (leather interiors for cars, house wares, jewellery, and the main one: clothes).
in fact I have your copy of 55.7b here: .........let me look, oh yes there it is signed ______________JL

egardless, that JP 270 is all YOU.  It is currently my favorite, although I've only taken it out twice, mid - sized board.  (He,ha,,he I've been sailing in the Gorge most of the time lately on that little naish 8'4" on 3.0m and 3.5m...he , he, he....what a blast.
However in 5.5-6.5 winds that JP is the best, it is so light and sails incredibly - they are the hottest boards now and have been for about 4 years.  (actually my 2 buddies in the gorge traded their used JP's in for new ones and actually have been trying to get their old ones back - I guess the 2002s aren't as good as the earlier ones - sometimes this happens [as a company matures and seeks higher profits at construction's cost).
The 270 probably won't be that good in only 12 knots of wind but over 14-15 knots and with that big fin that it comes with you should be fine, and I'd suggest that you could handle a 6.5 m on it no problem.  Its ideal size though is a 6.0...which for me (170 lbs) is around 16-17 knots.  (I'd suggest to eventually get a smaller fin for the 5.0 days too - which it can hang in there for, maybe even a 4.5m day if it isn't too wavy.)
What else can I tell you,  oh yeah sacrifice that Tiga plastic fantastic to the wind gods. As far as prices go, you know how it works, the more you buy the more you save.......Paul
Hello I've been looking at you web site with lots of envy. I live in Prince Edward Island which is on the east coast of Canada> I was wondering what you might have in a 6-6.5 freeride or wave sail to use on my 272 axxis. I am looking for a good sail but one that is inexpensive if you have such could you let me know in Canadian dollars and an estimate on what shipping might be Postal code is ?><:"? P.E.I., thanks and happy sailing, W  Hey W,  I'll take another look downstairs tomorrow morning for you, I'm off to Canada Saturday probably, to deliver a whole bunch, I use purolator to ship from Vancouver to PEI (I love PEI, I grew up in Cape Breton!). For now though, basically just multiply the US figure by 1.56 for Cdn $, I'll reduce shipping to $30 cdn, instead of $30 US to PEI, provided that if I ever get out to PEI you'll show me the sailing sites? When is it good there? there is a great 6.0 Naish freeride koa http://www.windsurfdeals.com/i-Sails-naish.htm
Hi, need a centerboard for the old windsurfer. Any ideas ? Thanks L Hey L, I've been asked that several times, good luck, they are hard to find. Keep me informed if you find one, cause I'll keep my eyes open for you. Paul

All sales are final.  Windsurfing is dangerous and gear (new or used) breaks, always at the most critical times when your body is at risk.  That is why this is called a sport and why we love it so much - be responsible for your own wipeouts and for checking your gear before EVERY sailing session.  Having said that, I try my best to describe all items accurately and in detail.  Please send email to paul@windsurfdeals.com with questions or comments about windsurfing gear, to enquire about a custom website for your organization, or to hire me as an economist/policy analyst/planner
